Endangered Species Chocolate
- What is the mission of the Endangered Species Chocolate Company?
Our mission is to create, manufacture, market and sell delicious, high-quality, all-natural fairly traded, naturally shade-grown, and kosher products, as well as products that are certified organic and Fair Trade. We believe fine products play a positive role in people’s lives.
- Where did the idea come from to combine the plight of endangered species and the sale of quality chocolate?
Endangered Species Chocolate was founded in 1993 in an effort to spread awareness and to make an impact on the growing number of plant and animal species that are disappearing from Earth. We believe that all life is precious and deserves our respect, kindness and care. Through our premium chocolate products, we seek to spread environmental awareness and ignite compassion for all life that shares our planet.
- What is the importance of knowing where every ingredient comes from in terms of making your chocolate?
Endangered Species Chocolate is fully committed to providing customers with delicious, all-natural chocolate made from beans that are shade grown on cacao trees under the natural canopy of the rainforest. This is important, because we support farms that don’t cut down the trees of the rainforest, which are critical to our Earth’s ecosystem.
- Can you describe the term “fair trade” and what it means in terms of your company and mission.
For us at ESC, the term “fair trade” means that all workers earn a fair wage and enjoy humane working conditions. It means we pay fair prices for harvested products. “Fair Trade” is an actual certification provided by TransFair – an innovative, market-based approach to sustainable development. - How does working towards the preservation of endangered species fit into the larger global picture of the environmental struggle that is taking place right now?
Endangered Species Chocolate is committed to a double bottom line: Social Bottom Line – We envision Earth as a cleaner, kinder, more tolerant habitat. To that end, all cocoa beans used in ESC Chocolate are naturally shade grown and harvested under fair labor conditions on small family properties. Income derived from these crops benefits the local communities. Financial Bottom Line – We give financial resources to fund programs that help habitats survive and flourish, thereby supporting endangered species and helping our fellow humans.

- If you could offer one piece of advice to customers as to how to become more aware about the products they are buying what would it be?
Buy products from companies with clear missions that you agree with. You can learn this by reading labels and visiting Web sites. At ESC, our philosophy is Reverence for Life. All business decisions support Reverence for Life and a deep commitment to save species, conserve habitat and honor human life. Our customers like the fact that our delicious chocolate is all-natural, fairly traded and naturally shade grown. They also like that ESC makes financial contributions to organizations that support endangered species. We live our mission.
